DURHAM Cathedral is one of Britain’s top five must-see landmarks, says one of the world’s biggest travel site.

TripAdvisor named the Norman World Heritage site at number five in the UK, in its Travellers’ Choice awards for attractions.

Durham is one of two North East venues to feature in the top 10, with Northumberland’s Cragside House and Gardens at number eight.

TripAdvisor’s number one UK attraction is the Royal Yacht Britannia, now moored in Edinburgh, with the Houses of Parliament second, followed by the Bomber Command Memorial and the Tower of London.

Windsor Castle, Big Ben, Liverpool Central Library and Edinburgh Castle round out the top 10.

“With schools breaking up for the summer holidays in a matter of weeks, these attractions will serve as a great must-see-and-do list for families – especially as many of them can be enjoyed for free,” said TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay.

“London cements its reputation as a city of fantastic parks with five award wins – only Paris and Moscow scored as many award-winning parks.

“But for the UK’s best-rated landmark you have to look outside the capital to Edinburgh, where the Royal Yacht Britannia has claimed the number one spot for the first time,” James continued.

Machu Picchu in Peru is the website’s number one attraction worldwide, with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, the Taj Mahal in India, the Great Cathedral and Mosque in Cordoba, Spain, and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City making up the top five.

St James’s Park in London is ranked the UK’s best, but only scrapes in at 24th in the world listing.

Hyde Park, Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens and Holyrood Park come in second, third and fourth place in the UK, with Regents Park in fifth.
