Durham batting blow in Second XI friendly

A strong Second XI took on Leicestershire in the first warm-up friendly at Brandon, but rain forced an abandonment after 46 overs.

Leicestershire were 254-3 when the heavens opened, with Ryan Pringle taking 2-40 in his 10 overs, while Josh Coughlin took the wicket of opener Mark Pettini, who fired 78 off 86 balls, with 10 fours, for the visitors.

Ateeq Javid added 53 not out for Leicestershire, while Zak Chappell was unbeaten on 44. Will Smith, Cameron Steel, Graham Clark and Michael Richardson were all hoping for batting practice in a side skippered by Gareth Harte.

The sides meet again at the Emirates Riverside tomorrow, for the first day of a three-day friendly.

Next week’s friendly against Scotland has been switched to the Emirates Riverside from Burnopfield.

Durham’s first XV, beaten by Kent inside two days in their opening Specsavers County Championship Division Two match, return to action on Friday with a trip to Northamptonshire.
