Duncan Watmore's dad, Ian, resigns from EFL board over heart condition

Ian Watmore, the current First Civil Service Commissioner and former Chief Executive of the FA, was appointed as a Independent Non-Executive Director in June of this year.

But he has now tendered his resignation following medical advice after a heart condition showed signs of reappearing.

And the 60-year-old, who has previously held several positions within the game, says 'this is it' for his career in football.

Speaking after the decision was made, Watmore said: “Having stabilised a heart condition some time ago, it has shown strong signs of reappearing and I have been advised this week medically to take a step back professionally or risk serious problems.

"Having watched half of the 72 EFL teams this season live, I can testify to what a great League it is in all three divisions, and all competitions.

“I’d like to thank everyone in the EFL, and am sorry to be letting them down.

"My love of football and sport in general remains undiminished, but I realise this is it in terms of working in the industry going forward."

Interim EFL Chair, Debbie Jevans CBE, said: “Whilst disappointed, I fully understand the reasons behind Ian stepping down from the Board.

"In his all too short tenure he made a significant contribution to a number of key issues affecting the League and its Clubs.

"His knowledge and extensive experience of the industry was an important and valued asset.

"On behalf of myself and the Board, we wish Ian a speedy recovery and the very best for the future.”

Watmore was a cabinet officer under Tony Blair and David Cameron, and was previously Chief Executive of the FA between June 2009 and March 2010.
