Duke of Gloucester presents Durham painter with Apprentice of the Year award

A YOUNG painter made a splash by winning a national award.

Kristian Pilmer, a painting and decorating apprentice from New College Durham, is celebrating after winning the National Apprentice of the Year 2013 at the British Association of Painting and Decorating Awards.

The 21-year-old was invited to the ceremony, which took place at the Plasterers Hall in London, after winning the Northern heat.

As well as the prestigious title of Apprentice of the Year, Kristian won £500 worth of Purdy equipment.

His award was presented by the Duke of Gloucester.

Competitors were challenged with a task involving complex setting out, free brush work, sponging, stencil application with a decorative effect and sticker application.

Kristian said: “The competition was really hard and I was up against the country’s best decorators. Winning this prestigious award is the biggest moment of my career.”
