Drunk Manchester City fan urinated on ambulance after being thrown out of game at Sunderland

Drunk Lee Collins, 47, took exception to being ejected from the ground and took his frustration out on the emergency vehicle “because he associated it with the police”, Sunderland magistrates heard.

But he is now so ashamed that he is raising money for charity and plans on missing a crucial game to punish himself, the court was told.

Prosecutor Rebecca Laverick said the incident occurred during Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to Man City on February 2.

“The defendant had been ejected from the football ground on the basis that he was drunk,” Ms Laverick said.

“He was seen on CCTV to urinate against the side of an ambulance and to take hold of the windscreen wiper and bending it outwards.”

Collins was arrested, telling officers he was angry because he had been removed from the ground.

Ms Laverick said: “He said he was frustrated that he had been taken out of the ground and in his stupidity he had damaged the windscreen wiper, because he associated the ambulance with the police, that’s why he had taken out his anger on the ambulance.”

Collins, of St Margaret’s Close, Prestwick, Manchester, admitted criminal damage. He has no previous convictions the court heard.

Neil Hodgson, defending, said: “He is 47 years of age and he very much regrets what he’s done.

“His girlfriend and his son are very much ashamed of his actions.

“He’d come to the football match on the train to celebrate a friend’s 50th birthday and they were going to go back on the coach after the game.

“Outside, he didn’t know where he was, because he hasn’t been to Sunderland before. He couldn’t find the toilet facilities.”

Mr Hodgson said that when police released him from custody the following morning, Collins’ friends had left without him and he had to catch the train.

Mr Hodgson added: “He is so disgusted with himself he said he is going to donate to charity his ticket for the Dynamo Kiev v Man City game, to the local pub. He is going to donate the money that is raised to charity.

“To punish himself, he won’t go to the game.”

Collins was fined £280, with £85 costs and a £28 victim surcharge, He was told to pay £30 compensation to the ambulance service for the broken windscreen wiper.
