Driver suffers serious injuries in Wearside road crash

A female driver was seriously hurt after a road smash in Wearside today.

A woman was taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries after a road smash in Houghton this morning.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, had to be cut free from her vehicle by fire fighters after her Audi Q7 collided with a Range Rover on Station Road, Houghton, this morning.

She was placed on a stretcher by fire crews before being taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with suspected severe spinal injuries.

The driver of the Range Rover did not require medical assistance.

Two fire crews from Washington and one from Birtley were called to the scene at 11.50am this morning.

Fire fighters removed the roof of the Audi car in order to safely remove the driver from the car.
