Driver killed in A690 crash in Houghton named by police

A motorist who died at the scene after his vehicle left the A690 and crashed into a field near Houghton today has been named.

Adam Brennan, 40, from Shaftbury Park in Hetton, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident off the Sunderland-bound carriageway of the dual carriageway.

Police closed off a lane of the road for several hours as well as access to the road from the A182 in Houghton town centre, with paramedics and firefighters also on the scene.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to the incident, which happened at around 7am.

Traffic was diverted on to the A1404 and A182 towards the A19 while the emergency services dealt with the collision.

A truck was seen at the scene in the aftermath of the accident.
