Driver, 72, taken to hospital after crash with van in Hetton

A PENSIONER had to be taken to hospital after a van crashed into the side of his car.

It happened close to the Fox and Hounds pub in North Road, Hetton, at noon on Saturday.

The man was in his Seat Leon when a Ford Transit crashed into the side of the car.

One crew from North Moor fire station in Sunderland rushed to the scene, where the 72-year-old driver had to be cut out of the car by officers using specialist equipment.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with a minor cut to his arm.

The road had to closed for a short time but was later re-opened.
