Firefighters still on scene of huge barn blaze as 'controlled burn' expected for 12 hours

Firefighters from County Durham & Darlington Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident – which was near to the Durham Fire Station in Lanchester Road – late on Tuesday, June 23.

The initial call came into crews at around 10.20pm, with firefighters working through the night.

Dramatic pictures released by the service on social media showed crews in attendance at the fire, battling to bring the blaze under control.

Three crews were called to the scene from Durham and Spennymoor stations, with additional support from a Targeted Response Vehicle from Darlington.

The bulk water carrier from Spennymoor was also dispatched.

A statement on the fire service’s Facebook page, posted shortly after 11.45pm on Tuesday, said: “Durham Green Watch were quick to raise the alarm tonight when they spotted a barn on fire to the rear of Durham Fire Station.

“Three appliances and a Targeted Response Vehicle from Durham and Spennymoor stations are currently fighting the fire which is approximately 1,000 tonnes of hay in a barn.”

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed to the Echo on Wednesday, June 24 that the fire is ‘burning under control’ and is expected to do so for around 12 hours.

An estimated 500 tonnes of hay were still alight at the last update from the scene, the spokeswoman added.

One appliance from Consett remains in attendance.
