THE drama won’t be just in the classroom for a Wearside teacher.
Laura Tindall, a music and performing arts teacher at Red House Academy, will herself be stepping into the limelight.
Laura, who has worked at the school for five years, is directing and choreographing a production of Grease with the Youth Theatre Company that she formed within the school.
But, after encouraging her students to sing up, Laura will be taking to the stage in an 80s themed musical.
The Sunderland teacher will be playing the part of the nervous, anxious and shy character, Andy, in West End Musical Theatre Company’s latest production Stepping Out.
Laura, who is no stranger to the theatre, said: “I have been performing in amateur theatre all my life really and it is my passion.
“It’s that enthusiasm that I bring to my job when I teach music and performing arts at school. My school life and private life are very similar in that respect.”
Laura’s roles have included those in musicals such as La Cage Aux Folles, West Side Story, The Witches of Eastwick and Jekyll and Hyde at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle.
She said: “I’m so used to performing in musicals, where it really is a marrying of the art forms of singing, acting and dancing.
“But, in Stepping Out, I’m really enjoying the challenges of it being a play with a real focus on the acting. My character, Andy, has different layers to her which become more apparent to the audience as the play progresses.”
Stepping Out, written by Richard Harris and set in the 1980s, tells the story of the lives, loves and laughs of nine women and one man who attend the weekly tap class in a church hall.
The small cast has been put through their paces not only in learning lines and portraying their characters, but have also had to attend weekly tap dancing classes.
Laura said: “Learning the tap routines hasn’t been hard, but what is difficult is trying to make it look awkward and that you don’t know what you’re doing.”
Stepping Out will run from Thursday, February 26 to Saturday, February 28 at 7pm at Royal Grammar School, Eskdale Terrace, Jesmond.
