A DOG had to be cut free by firefighters after impaling itself on railings.

The seven-stone Japanese Akita-type pet leapt from a first-floor window in Springwell Village, near Washington.

A three-foot metal spike went through the dog’s back leg, leaving it trapped, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Eight firefighters from Sunderland West station used specialist cutting equipment to free the dog.

Police dog handlers took the injured animal to the PDSA hospital in Gateshead for treatment.

Details of the incident have been passed on to the RSPCA.
