A SHINEY ROW couple are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today.
Norman and Eleanor Cresswell, aged 81 and 80 respectively, are marking 60 years of marriage after tying the knot on January 29, 1955.
The couple married at St Andrew’s Church, Chilton Moor. after meeting each other as teenagers at a dance in Chester-Le-Street ballroom.
Lydia Cresswell, the couple’s daughter-in-law, believes it is simply love that has kept them together for so long.
She said: “It’s so easy to get a divorce now but back in their era, couples got together and stayed together.
“They married a bit younger than we do but they haven’t had to persevere, they clearly adore each other.”
Eleanor is a former employee of the Sunderland Echo, having worked in the canteen for nine years from 1991, while Norman worked as a mechanic.
The couple have two sons, Colin and Kevin.
The family celebrated the occasion with a meal at The Chilton Country Pub, in Fencehouses.
