FAMILIES are being urged to enjoy weekend play days at a refurbished centre in the city.
Sunderland Children Coalfield Centre’s Barnwell School facility has recently been refurbished and families are being offered the chance to use the revamped indoor and outdoor facilities every Saturday from 9am.
The centre has undergone a range of improvements, with new furnishings, toys and play areas, and most recently, the outdoor area was developed, with mud gardens, sand pits and water play areas for all members of the family to enjoy together.
Councillor Pat Smith, portfolio holder for Children’s Services, said: “Since the refurbishment the Coalfield Centre has seen more and more families come to join in with the free activities and play, and the Saturday play time is proving especially popular.
“Our Saturday sessions are giving parents and carers the opportunity to spend real quality play time with their young ones over the weekend, and it’s great to see so many families attending and making use of the great facilities we have on offer.”
Work began on the dedicated outdoor play and learning space over the summer, and the centre marked the development of the new grounds with the burial of a time capsule of the children’s art.
The work was completed in September and has been a welcome improvement that has drawn more families to use the centre’s facilities and services.
Coun Smith added: “All of the Sunderland Children’s centres are there to offer children the tools and experience they need to get them off to the best start in life, and with the refurbishment of the Coalfield Centre, families can really see the benefits for their children.”
Barnwell in Houghton is one of three main centres used to deliver activities in the coalfield area.
