And boss David Moyes hopes that Saturday’s victory at Bournemouth has given his side the confidence needed to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since May.

Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League, but it looks far healthier after the spirited 2-1 win against Eddie Howe’s Cherries.

Moyes’ side had gone 10 games without a victory but finally put an end to their shocking start thanks to goals from Victor Anichebe and Jermain Defoe.

The Sunderland boss was delighted to finally get up and running.

“We’ve got the first win, but one win doesn’t keep you in the Premier League and neither does two,” said Moyes.

“But if we don’t get to two then we’ll never get moving any further. I hope this will give the boys confidence to go on to get the second one.”

Bournemouth took the lead 11 minutes in as Dan Gosling chested the ball into the net after Sunderland were cut open down their left-hand side, with Adam Smith providing the cross.

Moyes admitted that he feared the worst, but his team showed great character to head back to Wearside with all three points.

He added: “It was another typical bad goal to concede and we’ve been doing too much of that. We allowed them to get inside us at the back, I thought ‘here we go again’.

“We now need to go on and get the second win – we’ve talked a lot about getting the first. but now let’s talk about the second and let’s see if we can find a way to get that quite quickly.

“I’ve been spending [Saturday nights] in a dark room. This week it’s much brighter.”

Sunderland were backed by 1,200 fans at the Vitality Stadium. Moyes, who took his squad to the Nissan factory last week, heaped praise on the superb Sunderland support, who made a 700-mile round-trip.

He added: “We went to Nissan during the week and one of the boys was saying their bus was leaving at 5am.

“It’s great that people like him and his friends are giving us such support but we’ve not been giving them anything to shout about.

“All football fans everywhere travel a lot of miles to support their team, but I think Sunderland fans deserve credit for what they do.”
