Cyclists warned of drinking and riding danger

Cyclists are being urged not to drink and ride.

The message comes after figures show those who have consumed alcohol then get on their bikes are 10 times more likely to have an accident.

Of 41 cyclists killed on Britain’s roads in 2012, 24% had alcohol in their blood, 15% were over the drink-drive limit.

Suzannah Robin, alcohol safety expert at AlcoDigital, said: “We generally associate the dangers of drink-driving with getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

“However, the risks to cyclists are just as profound.

“As with driving, riding a bike whilst under the influence of drink or drugs is an offence if a cyclist is impaired to the extent that it makes them unfit to do so.

“Although there is no UK drink-drive limit for cyclists, the only safe limit is zero.”
