Cyclist fighting for his life following collision with police van responding to emergency

A cyclist is fighting for his life in hospital following a collision with a police van in the early hours of this morning (August 21).

Durham Constabulary were responding to an emergency call when a collision took place on the A167, near Newton Aycliffe, shortly after 12.30am on Friday, August 21 involving a police van and a cyclist.

The male cyclist was rush to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, where he remains with injuries described as life-threatening.

The A167 remains closed between Central Avenue and Rushyford and has been cordoned off by officers.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The family have been informed and are being supported.

“One officer was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

“The A167 between Central Avenue, Newton Aycliffe, and Rushyford will remain closed for some time.

“We have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
