A WEARSIDE teenager has appeared in court accused of starting a fire at a youth hostel.
Flames ripped through the Tyneside Foyer, in Westgate Road Newcastle, causing residents to flee their bedrooms into the street.
A 17-year-old, from Sunderland, has now appeared before magistrates in Newcastle charged with arson.
The court was told that because of the seriousness of the charges – arson with intent to endanger life and an alternative charge of arson being reckless as to endanger life – the case would be heard at the city’s crown court.
No pleas were entered by the teenager.
He was granted bail and is due to appear for a committal hearing at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on October 11.
The Tyneside Foyer supports and trains 16 to 25-year-old homeless and vulnerable people.
The fire at the building happened on January 21.
