CRUEL rogue traders conned an 88-year-old man out of £1,000 of his savings.

The pensioner was approached by four men who claimed that his roof needed work doing to it and quoted him about £400.

However, after they had carried out repairs on the property in West Boldon, they charged £1,000 which the man paid in full in cash.

The incident happened on Wednesday, May 25, between noon and 3pm.

The men were all white. One was described as being in his late 30s to early 40s, about 5ft 7is tall, with short, light-ginger hair.

A second man was described as similar looking, and the pair could possibly have been brothers.

They left in a white Transit van.

Acting Detective Inspector Sharon Chatterton said: “We would ask people to remain vigilant at all times when answering the door to someone they’re not expecting.

“They should check identity cards, which should include a photograph of the caller and details of the company.

“If the caller is genuine, they won’t mind waiting while their credentials are checked.”
