A WOMAN tried to pass drugs to an inmate of Frankland Prison after receiving threats from her husband.

Nikki Stewart had been a victim of domestic violence and was scared of the consequences if she did not try to smuggle the Subutex opiate tablets, Durham Crown Court heard.

But after a police strip search, 12 tablets were found concealed on her body.

The court was told the buprenorhpine tablets – commonly known as Subutex – have a street value of about £1 each, but this can rise to as much as £40 each inside prison.

Stewart, 25, of Benwell Village Mews, Newcastle, admitted possession of a class C drug with intent to supply it on July 13,

Judge Penny Moreland sentenced Stewart to 180 hours of community work and a 12-month supervision order.

The tablets found on Stewart were confiscated and will be destroyed.
