Woman raped in Sunderland city centre

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 38-year-old woman reported she was raped in Sunderland.

The rape happened in Sunderland City Centre between 3.45am and 6.30am on Saturday, July 13, in the vicinity of Fawcett Street and Atheneum Street.

The incident was reported to police on Tuesday, July 16.

The offender is described as a white male, around 6ft tall, in his 30s, medium build and wearing what was described as a warm jacket.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have any information to contact them.

Superintendent Alan Veitch, of Sunderland Area Command, said: “We understand the concern incidents like this cause to our communities and would like to reassure people we are carrying out enquiries in order to find the man responsible.

“Extra officers will be in the city centre as part of the investigation to carry out enquiries as well as to offer reassurance to members of the public.

“The victim remembers seeing a disturbance in the city shortly before the rape happened and we’d urge anyone who remembers seeing the disturbance or was involved to contact us as they may be able to help us identify the man responsible.”
