Woman arrested on suspicion of breaching coronavirus restrictions as part of car crime inquiry

A woman arrested on suspicion of interfering with vehicles was also taken into custody in connection with a lockdown breach.

Durham Constabulary sent officers to check out a report someone was trying door handles in the Grange Village area of Chester-le-Street earlier today, Sunday, April 26.

They found a woman matching a description of the one given in the call and she was arrested on suspicion of offences including vehicle interference and breach of COVID-19 regulations.

She remains in custody this evening as inquiries continue.

A spokesperson for the force said appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch.

They said: “If you have CCTV, or have seen or heard anything in the early hours this morning in Grange Villa, or the surrounding area, please get in contact us with us.

“While we will be as proactive as possible in targeting this type of crime, we continue to appeal to the public to ensure that they keep their doors locked to their cars and homes to protect themselves becoming a victim.

“Almost every single theft of this nature is from an unlocked door.
