Woman, 62, taken to hospital after Sunderland sex attack

POLICE are hunting a man who sexually assaulted a 62-year-old woman in a terrifying Sunderland street attack.

It happened at about 5.50pm on Thursday at a bus shelter near the wooded area in Trimdon Street.

Northumbria Police said the victim was approached by a man who grabbed her and assaulted her. She suffered facial injuries and needed hospital treatment.

The attacker was about 6ft tall, 25 to 30 years old, with short brown hair.

Neighbourhood Inspector Neal Craig, who covers the area, said: “This was a nasty attack on a woman in the early hours of the evening.

“Understandably the victim has been left incredibly shaken by the assault.

“We’re carrying out extensive enquiries to identify who is responsible.

“We would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to contact police. Information we receive from members of the public could prove crucial.

“Officers will be carrying out regular patrols in the area to reassure people and answer any concerns they have.”
