Witnesses plea in flat blaze

INQUIRIES are continuing today after an arson investigation was launched into a flat fire.

Emergency services were called to a property in Queensberry Street, Millfield, at about 5.50am on Monday.

As reported in the Echo, firefighters had to rescue a 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman from an upstairs flat.

The pair were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Two women, aged 19 and 21, escaped with a two-year-old child from a downstairs flat.

The fire is thought to have been started deliberatley at the front door of the property.

Northumbria Police confirmed they were treating the incident as arson.
