Cash and jewellery were stolen in the raid and a member of staff suffered minor injuries and needed hospital treatment.

The offenders were wearing dark clothing, and were not armed.

Extra police have been in the area all day to offer reassurance and carry out inquiries.

It’s believed the offenders made off in a silver Mazda MX5, which was later found abandoned on Sheepfolds Industrial Estate.

Police are asking anyone who saw the car or anything suspicious around Athenaeum Street to contact them.

Detective Inspector Dave English said: “We’re keen to speak to anyone who was in the city centre around Athenaeum Street or anyone who saw a silver Mazda MX5 - either before or after the robbery.”
