Vulnerable man beaten unconscious with his own crutches in Sunderland

A VULNERABLE man was beaten unconscious with his own crutches in an attack at his own home.

It is believed the 66-year-old victim was set upon after he answered the door to a man who asked him for cigarettes.

He invited the man into his home and after the conversation, he was assaulted knocked out with his own metal crutch and became unconscious.

When he came round the man had left and the injured man went to a neighbour’s home for help and the emergency services were called.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he received stitches for a head wound.

The incident happened on Thursday July 10 in Grindon Lane., and police were called at about 3.05am.

Police are investigating the assault and are carrying out door to door enquiries.

The offender is described as wearing a greenish coloured jacket and is believed to be from the Ryhope area.

Detective Sergeant Barbara Hutchinson, said: “We are appealing for help from the public to find the person responsible for this assault on a vulnerable man.”
