MURDER police today named a man who died after being discovered unconscious in a back lane.

Carl Brennan, of Charles Street, Boldon Colliery was found behind John Williamson Street and South Fredrick Street, in South Shields, at around 11pm on Friday.

The 31-year-old was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Post-mortem examination results have been inconclusive, but it is not believed a weapon was used.

A 19-year-old woman and 27-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder.

They have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Neighbours said a man and woman with a small child live at the house which was part of the crime scene.

Model-maker Colin Reay, 50, said: “I heard shouting in the back lane, but didn’t think much about it as you hear shouts all the time.

“It was a man’s voice and then about 20 minutes later I heard other people talking.

“Everyone was outside because the police and an ambulance were there.”

Traci Wilson, 41, said: “You don’t expect this to happen outside your home.

“The couple who moved into that house where the police are standing guard have only been there a couple of months.

“They have a little boy aged about five and a dog. They seemed quite quiet.”

Detective Inspector Paul Woods of the Major Crime Team said: “We are continuing our investigations and enquiries into the circumstances around this man’s death are ongoing.

“It is vital that anyone who may have heard or seen anything in the area at the time or has any information contacts police.

“All information – no matter how trivial it may seem – could be imperative to this investigation.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
