Two men have been arrested after an alleged attack on a woman in Sunderland.

Police say an assault took place at 5.15pm in Pallion Park on Thursday.

A 23-year-old remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of assault, and a 26-year-old has been released under investigation after being arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police were in the street in connection with an assault in Pallion Park.

"The assault happened at 5.15pm when a woman was attacked.

"She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in police custody.

"A second man, aged 26, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife and has been released under investigation.

"It’s believed those involved are known to each other.
