Two arrests after Sunderland bag snatches

POLICE have arrested two men in connection with Sunderland bag snatches.

A 71-year-old woman was left with a broken arm and head injuries after trying to resist a man who grabbed her bag in a lane behind the Spar Shop in Cleveland Road on Monday.

An 88-year-old woman had her handbag snatched in Chester Road on Wednesday afternoon. She was not hurt.

Yesterday, a 27-year-old woman was walking along the mineral line on Chester Road when a man grabbed her handbag. She was also uninjured.

Yesterday, police arrested two men - aged 42 and 36 - on suspicion of theft. They have been released without charge, pending further investigation.

Neighbourhood Inspector Cheryl Warcup, said: “There have now been three incidents in the past week.

“Whether or not they’re linked is forming part of our enquiries and we’d urge anyone who may have been in the area around these times to contact police.

“Officers will be carrying out regular patrols in the area.”
