A MAN is in an induced coma after suffering serious head injuries in an attack.
The 30-year-old is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the incident, which happened in Blackhall during the early hours of Tuesday.
Police were called to Second Street shortly after 12.30am following reports of a disturbance.
When officers arrived they found the victim lying on the floor inside his house, unconscious and bleeding from his mouth.
He was taken by ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he was found to have suffered serious head injuries.
He has been heavily sedated since his admission.
Two men who live in the area and are aged 30 and 32, were arrested on Tuesday morning on suspicion of assault.
After being questioned, they have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Police say further arrests are likely.
The officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Brad Howe, said at this stage police were still speaking to witnesses to establish exactly what had happened.
He said: “Officers were in the area for most of Tuesday carrying out enquiries and providing reassurance to local residents.
“We had a number of calls on the night from people reporting the incident.”
