POLICE are appealing for information after a theft from a grave in Sunderland.
Between 10am Tuesday, May 14, and 10am Friday, June 14, thieves stole a brass statue from the top of a grave in Sunderland Cemetery in Ryhope Road.
The statue is of a man and woman, and in the process of being stolen the theft caused damage to the headstone.
Neighbourhood Insp Jamie Southwell said: “This is a disgusting crime and we really need to identify who has done this and bring them to justice.
“To target and damage a gravestone is the lowest of the low and officers have checked local scrap dealers to see if the statue had been sold on, but as yet it is still outstanding.
“I’d appeal for anyone who knows where it is, or who knows who is responsible for this crime to contact police with information as soon as possible.”
Anyone with any information into the theft is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.
