A 27-YEAR-OLD man stole aftershave to raise money for Christmas presents.

David Wilkinson took two gift packs from Boots in The Bridges, Sunderland, with the help of his partner, Sunderland Magistrates’ Court heard.

“They entered the store together,” said Jeanette Smith, prosecuting. “He held a bag open for her to put the aftershave in.

“When arrested, he said he had no money, and wanted to raise funds for Christmas presents.

“The gift packs were priced at £56 each.”

Wilkinson, 27, of Salem Street, Hendon, admitted theft on November 22.

Angus Westgarth, defending, said in mitigation: “Mr Wilkinson had been in a relationship with his partner for six years.

“Having no money, and out of desperation, he stole to get some money to buy presents for her children.

“There has already been a financial penalty to him. Boots have sent him a bill for £250 for their time for looking at CCTV and making other inquiries about the incident.

“It is obvious they would take steps to get this money, so Mr Wilkinson has made an arrangement with them to pay at £5 a week.”

The magistrates sentenced Wilkinson to a conditional discharge of 12 months.
