A THIEF stole five mobile phones worth almost £2,000.

Stephen Revell, from Glebe in Washington, was caught on CCTV climbing over a counter in Asda in Washington and forcing open a display cabinet with a screwdriver.

He pleaded guilty to theft of mobiles worth £1,979, at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Keith Laidlaw, prosecuting, said it was 2.20am when Revell, 34, stole the phones. He was arrested that morning.

Mr Laidlaw said: “He said he was chased by police and discarded property during the chase.”

Gavin Sword, defending, said Revell, of Thornton Court, turned to theft after his benefits were stopped. Sentencing was adjourned until April 19, so pre-sentence reports could be prepared.
