Thief sent to jail after snatching £700 worth of Yankee Candles from shop window
A thief who swiped more than £700 of Yankee Candles from a shop is set to spend Christmas behind bars.
David Gray smashed his way into Cheers card shop, in Front Street, Chester-le-Street, on the evening of Friday, October 11, and stole 31 scented candles worth around £743 from the window display.
Durham Constabulary launched an investigation, which included analysing CCTV, forensic examination of blood found at the scene and an appeal for information.
Gray, 38, of no fixed abode, was arrested on Thursday, November 7, and later charged with burglary.
He admitted the offence when he appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to six weeks in prison and ordered to pay £440.
A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Burglaries like this can have a devastating impact on businesses and the communities they serve.
“We are pleased that Gray has admitted his guilt and will be spending the festive period off the streets and behind bars.”
