A TEENAGER has been arrested on suspicion of trying to steal a bike in Washington.

A householder disturbed the raider as he tried to take her daughter’s bike from the garden at their home on Sulgrave Road at about 2.30am yesterday.

The would-be thief ran off empty handed after being confronted.

A 16-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of theft and is currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Stewart said: “Over the summer months people are out in their gardens and children’s toys which have not been used since last year are being dusted off and taken outside.

“We’re asking people to help us reduce the opportunities this presents to opportunist thieves.

“Please make sure items are not left out overnight, lock them back in a shed or garage. In the case of children’s bikes, don’t leave them lying on the lawn once the little ones are tired of them, take them back inside and make sure they are not left out to tempt criminals.”
