TWO teenagers have been arrested in connection with a car smash which saw a vehicle flip over.

A Vauxhall Insignia and a Ford Focus collided on Durham Road, next to the A690 sliproad westbound at the turn-off for East Rainton.

Paramedics took the driver of the Insignia to University Hospital North Durham, but he was discharged hours later after suffering only minor injuries.

Two 16-year-old girls have now been arrested in connection with the accident, which happened shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Police officers and highway workers removed the cars by 10.30pm.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 8.40pm on Tuesday, we received a report of a two-car collision in Durham Road, East Rainton.

“The vehicles involved were a Vauxhall Insignia and a Ford Focus. The driver of the Insignia was taken to University Hospital of North Durham as a precaution and he has since been released with minor injuries.

“Two 16-year-old girls have been arrested in connection with the crash and enquiries are ongoing.”
