AN attacker who punched two strangers in the street because he thought they were “asking for it” has been locked up.

Self-confessed “scumbag” Connor Small fractured Kurt Harding’s jaw and left Demi Clark with a bloody nose during the double assault.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Harding, who was knocked unconscious, needed surgery and had metal plates fitted into his face to treat the injury.

He was left “very shaken” by the incident.

The attack happened at Holmeside, Sunderland, in the early hours of January 9.

When arrested after the incident Small told police the victims were “divvys” and said they were “asking for it”.

Small, of Paton Road, Plains Farm, who has a string of previous convictions for violence on the streets, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and common assault.

Judge Christopher Prince sentenced the 18-year-old to 12 months behind bars.

The judge said: “You clearly feel, on occasions, compelled to approach people, particularly people in the street, and assault them.”

Alec Burns, defending, said Small now realises the error of his ways and has vowed to change.

Mr Burns added: “He now looks back on his behaviour and, in his own words, when he was under the influence of drugs he was a complete scumbag.

“He realises what makes him behave irrationally is drink and drugs.”
