A TEENAGER was taken to hospital after being assaulted in a city centre street.

The 19-year-old was on a night out when he was attacked in Athenaeum Street in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the reveller was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

He suffered injuries to his head and was given treatment.

Detectives have now launched an investigation into the attack, which took place at about 3am.
