A TEACHING assistant has appeared in court charged with sexual activity with a pupil.

Helen Louise Turnbull faces four allegations of abuse of position of trust when she was involved in sexual activity with a boy aged between 13 and 17.

Each is said to have happened between June and July last year while she worked at a County Durham school.

Turnbull, 34, from Church View in Haswell, entered no plea when she appeared before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court today.

She spoke only to confirm her date of birth and address.

Prosecutor Sarah Traynor said the offences involved sexual touching.

The court was told the case was not suitable to be heard before the magistrates, with District Judge Christine Harrison sending the case to Durham Crown Court.

The next hearing will be held on Thursday, May 15, with Turnbull released on conditional bail until that date.
