Sunderland's family are on the last leg of £20,000 fundraiser to install bedroom lift for battling Alfie

The family of six-year-old Alfie Doran have spent months fundraising the thousands of pounds needed to install a lift directly into his bedroom.

Alfie Doran’s devoted parents were told a week after his first birthday that the youngster has Baliteral Spastic Cerebral Palsy - which affects him from the chin down.

The family have spent months raising the £20,000 needed to install a lift and carry out working in the garden to make it accessible for Alfie.

The brave boy also has epilepsy and a variable squint and is very prone to chest infections.

A fundraiser is now set to take place at The Grange, in Roker, on Friday, November 22 – where there will be entertainment and a raffle among other fundraising activities.

Sophie Dow, mum to Alfie and his twin Brody-Lee, said: “It’s really important we get this lift he’s now over three and a half stone – I’m only eight and a half stone so carrying him up the stairs is really tough .

“We’ve had so much support from people and we’re really at the final push now – I want to thank everyone who has supported us so far.

“Alfie is doing alright – he’s been a bit up and down with being tired quite a lot.

“We now have a bed in the downstairs room so we’re all quite crammed in.”

Alfie's grandparents go to The Grange, in Roker, for breakfast and manager Simon Munroe said he wanted to support the family in a bid to help them reach their final target.

Simon said: “We want to do all we can to support the local community and what they’re fundraising for will make such a difference for them as a family.”

A fundraising evening will include games, a raffle and other fundraising activities.

The fundraiser will take place on Friday, November 22, at 7pm until 11pm a the pub.
