A THIEF stole an £18 coat from a high street store.

Robert Hackett was seen by security guards snapping tags off the coat in Primark before trying to leave.

He was stopped by store detectives who called in police and Hackett was arrested. The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to theft at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Stan Sudworth, prosecuting, said staff monitoring CCTV were alerted to the theft on the afternoon of April 1.

Hackett was with a female accomplice when the coat was taken. She has since been granted bail until next month.

Hackett, who the court was told was living at the Swan Lodge hostel, will be sentenced in September.

Tom Morgan, defending, said: “There was certainly nothing sophisticated about this offence.”
