A BURGLAR who stole copper piping during a house break-in is facing three years behind bars.

Michael Podd targeted a property at St Leonards Street, Sunderland, on March 16.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 31-year-old faces a mandatory minimum sentence under the “three strikes” rule, due to his previous convictions for house raids. Podd, of Cairo Street, Hendon, pleaded guilty to burglary and was remanded in custody until later this month, when he will be sentenced.

Alec Burns, defending, said: “Even though he is a three-strike burglar, I would ask for a pre-sentence report.

“He knows what type of sentence he will get and it will be in terms of years.”
