A peeping Tom was snared by police after sordid videos of a woman undressing were found on his computer.

Pervert Shaun Mitchell, 52, had rigged a camera to capture his unsuspecting victim for his own sexual kicks, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Several videos were recorded in December 2013, but they went undiscovered until October last year, when a member of Mitchell’s extended family stumbled across the disgusting footage on his computer. The clips showed the young woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, getting undressed without her knowing she was being recorded.

Glenda Beck, prosecuting, told the court Mitchell was able to film the victim after he planted a USB camera stick in her room.

When police became involved, Mitchell told officers “It’s something I shouldn’t have done.”

Ms Beck added: “He was arrested and, when interviewed, he said he’d bought the USB camera to use in his car, but then the temptation to record a woman got the better of him.

“He admitted that he had recorded secretly and had no consent to do so.

“He admitted he had done it for his own sexual gratification and was disgusted with himself.”

The court heard one of the clips shows the defendant entering a room to set up the camera.

Another showed the woman getting changed. A third film showed her getting undressed, oblivious to her being caught on camera

Mitchell, of Twickenham Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to observing a person doing a private act for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification. Gerry Armstrong, defending, said the Probation Service had agreed to prepare a report into Mitchell’s personal circumstances, prior to sentence.

“The starting point is in the lowest bracket of this offence,” he added.

Bench chairman Derek Moss asked for a pre-sentence report – with all options, including custody available to the sentencing bench.

Mitchell will be sentenced on October 5.
