A MUM was taken to court after failing to send her daughter to school.

Sunderland Magistrates’ Court was told the 13-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, missed 20 days of school during the last autumn term.

Her mother had been ordered to attend meetings with the school, but did not turn up or reply to letters.

The mother, who also cannot be named, was sent on a parenting programme, but admitted she had not put the measures into place.

She initially denied the offence, but pleaded guilty at a hearing on Friday.

Gavin Sword, defending, said the woman was suffering from depression and had endured physical and verbal abuse from her daughter.

Chairman Derek Moss said: “We appreciate it has been very hard for you.”

The woman was given a 12-month conditional discharge, with a £15 victim surcharge.
