A motorist from Sunderland is one of eight drivers arrested within six days of a police campaign.
The arrests are part of Operation Dragoon - a Christmas Drink and Drug Driving crackdown.
Of the eight arrested one was from Sunderland who has since been charged with charged with drink driving, aggravated vehicle taking and failing to stop after an accident in Houghton.
During the month of action checkpoints have been set up across the force area to target motorists who may have got behind the wheel while drunk or high.
Every officer has been armed with a breathalyser and a drug testing kit while members of the Op Dragoon have also been using a high tech drugs kits donated by manufacturers Draeger.
Motor Patrols Chief Inspector John Heckels, said: “Extra patrols are out across the force and we will pull you over and test you if we suspect you have had a drink.
“In just under a week we have already carried out numerous tests on the roadside and we will carry on testing those we suspect of breaking the law.
“Drink and drug driving is a serious offence and we will not tolerate people putting innocent lives at risk by getting behind the wheel when they are not fit to drive.”
