Sunderland man will appear at crown court after incident which left woman with 'life changing' injuries

A man has will appear at crown court in connection with an incident which left a woman with “life-changing” injuries.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken to hospital following the incident outside St Margaret’s Court sheltered housing block, in Hylton Castle Road, Sunderland, on Sunday, November 17, at 5.50pm.

Mark Potter, 27, of Malvern Court, Newcastle, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court charged with wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon on Wednesday, November 20.

He did not enter a plea and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on Wednesday, December 18.

He has been remanded into custody.

A 54-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on police bail.

Inquiries into the incident, which is said to have involved a number of people fighting, are ongoing.

Police were at the scene for several hours after the alarm was raised on Sunday evening.

Further details about the woman’s “life-changing” injuries have still to be released.

John Oxborough, district manager for St Margaret’s Court, said at the weekend: “There was an incident that took place outside of the location which is being investigated by the police.

“We can confirm that no tenants were injured. The location is secure, and we have been supporting tenants throughout. The safety and wellbeing of our tenants is paramount.

“We acknowledge that some damage was done to cars parked in the car park.”
