A MAN stole sausages from a supermarket.

Darren Carney stole the £3 eight-pack of sausages from Tesco Metro in The Bridges on September 19, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Lee Poppett said Carney, of Hexham Road, Hylton Lane Estate, was seen hiding the sausages while scanning a different item, and was stopped by a security guard.

“The sausages were recovered and are certainly fit to sell, so there is no application for compensation,” Mr Poppett added.

Carney, who had not been in court, admitted theft, and was sentenced to a six-month conditional surcharge and told to pay £45 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

His solicitor Jason Smith said: “For the sake of £3 he is before the court for the first time in his life, and he is acutely embarrassed he is here.”
