A MAN accused of carrying out sex attacks spanning nearly two years has appeared in court.

Martin Kirkwood, from Herrington, is accused of sexually assaulting a number of women and schoolgirls in the Houghton area.

The 30-year-old was at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court yesterday facing charges of sexual assault.

Kirkwood, who gave his address in court as Railway Terrace, withheld his pleas.

The alleged offences date back to September 2012 and involve victims in their teens.

Paul Doney, prosecuting, told magistrates that the case was too serious for them to deal with, and asked for it to be sent to Newcastle Crown Court, where Kirkwood will appear on April 17.

Chairwoman of the bench Jan Leach remanded him in custody until then.
