Jeffrey Daniel Clarke, 38, of Sunderland, is now behind bars for 11 weeks after pleading guilty to the theft of the £24 bottle belonging to the Little Haven Hotel, in River Drive, South Shields, and two other charges.

Jailing him just 24 hours after the offence, South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court decided the case was “so serious because the defendant has a flagrant disregard for court orders”.

The court jailed him for eight weeks for the theft, which took place on July 22, and added another two weeks because he was in breach of a conditional discharge he received for a previous conviction in May.
