A TEENAGER arrested after a lesbian couple were attacked has been released on bail.

The 15-year-old was held on Tuesday after about 20 youths assaulted the couple outside a chip shop in Burdon Lane, Ryhope.

Police said one of the victims was in the chip shop when she approached by the gang sometime between 9pm and 9.14pm on Friday. A number of the youths then assaulted the woman, punching and kicking her and shouting abuse.

She fled the shop and called her partner who arrived to try to help. But the youths then subjected the second woman to the same physical and verbal abuse.

Both women, who are in their 20s, were left bruised and badly shaken.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses to telephone police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
