Police today appealed for information after a house was set on fire in Sunderland.

The fire happened at about 7.10am yesterday in Princess Street, near the city centre.

Damage was caused to a room in the property and three men were taken to hospital.

One, a 29-year-old, suffered burns and is still receiving treatment, though his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Two other men were released after treatment for breathing difficulties.

Inquiries suggest the fire was started deliberately and it is being treated as arson.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101, ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
